Beware Shoulder Surfing

Now manufacturers and software developers find more ways to make our mobile devices secure with biometrics and multi factor authentication, inevitably fraudsters are looking to human error to let them in.

The value is not really in your phone, it is in cracking the apps on there to access your financial information.

Sadly watching over your shoulder as you type in your bank app PIN, or even swiping your phone out of your hand while it is unlocked is the latest technique. If your phone is unlocked it makes it easier for criminals to change your PIN or face ID therefore potentially accessing your bank details.

Some tips to stay safe!

  • Be aware of your surroundings and who is watching you. Especially if you are opening your banking or other finance apps
  • Apple users can turn on a new feature in settings which uses a time delay when a PIN or face recognsiiton change is made - this would give you time to contact your bank
  • Use a different PIN to unlock your phone from the one you use to unlock any financial apps
