Tim Luke took first place in the Jester Challenge in 2018. Once described as ‘a modern experiment in old-fashioned self-reliance, self-sufficiency and personal responsibility’ whereby solo sailors pit themselves against the worst the Atlantic can throw at them to reach The Azores or North America. Every two years a group of hardy sailors set sail across the Atlantic from Plymouth. In 2018 the destination was Newport, Rhode Island.
It is not a club. Each sailor takes responsibility for him or herself. There are no boat safety checks and no entry fees. As somebody once said, they are just a bunch of delightfully mad people who enjoy the self-sufficiency and the solitude of sailing.
Tim was 62 when he took part in this amazing adventure and he still continues to challenge himself - his latest venture being an expedition to Greenland which he is currently enduring. We have been very lucky being able to catch him in between his travels to come and inspire us with his experiences.
The free event, held in the breath-taking Brathay Hall in Ambleside, will enable us to make the most of the Autumn evening light in the Lake District. We'll start with an aperitif and canapes before we listen to Tim in the theatre. The event will be finished by 6pm so you can continue to enjoy the rest of your evening plans.
Unfortunately this event is now fully booked. We are operating a waiting list in the event of any cancellations, if you would like to add yourself to this, please drop Rebecca an email.
